A rich history: Embracing Excellence 2018

Published by CME Manitoba on October 05, 2017

The largest LEAN event in Canada this 2018 will take place June 4-7. With seven keynotes, 15 workshops, 36 presentations and 18 tours; 1,000 leaders, managers and LEAN practitioners will gather in Winnipeg to explore LEAN thinking, share enterprise excellence and learn LEAN best practices.

Embracing Excellence 2018 is Canada’s national LEAN conference, and the third iteration of this CME-led event. AME joined us to co-present in 2015 and continues to partner and support in many other ways, including providing visibility with AME Canada members.

AME Boston 2017: a prequel to Embracing Excellence

AME, like CME, believes in the power of the network. Our two organizations share many key values and have maintained a successful, productive long-term partnership. For more than 20 years, AME has turned to CME to support LEAN conferences north of the border. Some of AME’s most successful events continue to be held every five or so years in Toronto (including the 2020 event just three years from now!)

AME’s commitment to operational excellence means the upcoming Boston conference – where more than 2,000 international delegates will come together in the pursuit of continuous improvement and operational excellence – will have no shortage of inspiration.

AME’s international conference provides some of the highest value to the international LEAN community there is. Embracing Excellence aims to deliver a similar caliber experience to Canadians, here at home.

LEAN across borders

The United States is Canada’s largest trading partner. More than 70 per cent of Manitoba exports head to our neighbours to the south. With a fluctuating Canadian dollar, it’s no secret that Manitoba manufacturers have found customer focus and operational effectiveness – LEAN cornerstones – at the heart of their cross-border success.

To expand, grow and prosper in tough international markets takes vision, commitment and a strong, company-wide LEAN culture; all of which are on the table at Embracing Excellence 2018. Moreover, CME’s strong partnership with AME means the opportunity to build a network, strengthen relationships and leverage lessons learned from leaders on both sides of the border.

“Half of our 5,800 employees are located in the US, with design, parts manufacturing, bus assembly, service, parts distribution and support functions located in multiple locations throughout Canada and the US.  It is critical that we apply and practice LEAN principles and culture through our entire organization’s value stream, regardless of borders.” Says Rob Marion, Director, Facilities Engineering and Lean, Maintenance, Facilities & Manufacturing Engineering for New Flyer Industries.

Smart companies know it’s critical to benchmark best-in-class practices and compare their experiences to successful businesses across a variety of industry sub-sectors to ensure continuous improvement efforts are on target.
