Manitoba Manufacturing Week turns 14 – celebrating excellence this March 19-23
Published by CME Manitoba on February 14, 2018
In the early 2000s, CME Manitoba’s board and leadership recognized the need to raise the profile of the sector with the government, the public and industry alike. Manitoba is home to a strong and growing manufacturing sector; leading the way in jobs, innovation and technological advancement worldwide – and Manufacturing Week provided a unique opportunity to showcase our talents and impact.
The provincial proclamation of Manufacturing Week, and the opportunity to stage several signature events in recognition of this important role – allowed for a celebration of industry excellence in recognition of the impact our sector has had (and continues to have) on our province’s history, economic wealth and prosperity. Most importantly, manufacturing week brings manufacturers together for an opportunity to leverage relevant and leading intelligence; with the opportunity for learning and innovation for local companies. Manufacturers, service providers and other key members of the manufacturing ecosystem are able to come away with ideas to help better address the challenges they face, and insights to help lead, improve and grow.
Says Tony van Rosmalen, former Vice President, CME Manitoba “we felt the most effective way we could help our manufacturers and exporters enhance their international competitiveness was by staging premiere events that would allow for sharing and exchanging of ideas and learning from the best!
Manufacturing Week brings together business leaders of Manitoba and beyond to learn from each other and gain new insights into leading developments taking place around the globe. It is also an opportunity to celebrate our successes and showcase the industry to our young and future leaders In order to gain recognition for the economic contribution the manufacturing and exporting sector is making to Manitoba and Canada”.
A brief history
The annual Manitoba Excellence Award, launched in 2002, was bestowed on individuals who had contributed to making Manitoba a better place to live, work and invest. This program was designed to promote and celebrate leadership and innovation in the Manitoba and Canadian manufacturing and exporting industries.
Dare to Compete – now the largest annual manufacturing event on the prairies – also began with modest roots as 80 attendees gathered at the Fairmont Hotel over 15 years ago to share success stories, lessons learned and best practices.
Manufacturing week grows in scope and scale
As Manufacturing Week continued to grow and thrive, especially through its two signature events – the Dare to Compete conference and the Gala Celebration – this single award soon grew to include a number of additional categories. The original award was retitled the Manufacturers Hall of Fame. A permanent Hall of Fame, housed in the University of Manitoba – Faculty of Engineering, helped strengthen the link between present recipients to future generations of manufacturing leaders.
Over time, Manitoba Manufacturing Week has accomplished many goals; in particular creating awareness of the importance of manufacturing and exporting to the economic and social well-being of Manitoba and to enhance the public’s perception of same; while at the same time profiling the importance of the manufacturing and exporting sector to public and labor force, and encouraging youth to consider manufacturing (as a career).
Today, Manitoba Manufacturing Week touches more than 1,000 delegates directly. It’s the province’s premier showcase for manufacturing professional development, industrial innovation, ingenuity and entrepreneurial excellence. Alongside the manufacturing community, guests from all levels of government – from the premier to city council – attend the events to stay engaged with manufacturers from across the province and listen to CME’s perspectives as the voice of manufacturing.
