Local voice – national strengths

Published by CME Manitoba on May 05, 2017

Manitoba’s membership represents the voice of manufacturing in the province, but our voice is amplified through the national network. Here is how CME is working to advance manufacturing interests in Canada.

Federal budget
The Federal budget contained several critical measures aimed at enhancing advanced manufacturing. CME was successful in securing wide ranging support for manufacturing based on what our members told us was critical to their business. We secured support and action for 12 of the 21 core recommendations of Industrie 2030 and five of the 10 core recommendations from CME’s pre-budget submission. Top level highlights include:

  • Creation of an Advanced Manufacturing Economic Table
  • Creation of an Advanced Manufacturing Super Cluster
  • Expansion of existing sector investment funds to cover all manufacturing sector with more capital
  • Complete manufacturing investment support program review, including regional investment support and the Scientific Research & Experimental Development program
  • Increased investment in training support programs
  • Creation of a program to support manufacturing innovation and commercialization through procurement

CME is now working with federal officials on these commitments to ensure their implementation is in line with member expectations and needs. A detailed analysis is available on the CME website.

NAFTA renegotiation
NAFTA renegotiation remains a top priority for CME. Over the past months, we have been working with members and the federal government to define priorities for renegotiation and supporting outreach and general communications. To date, the official renegotiation has not been launched, although we expect it to begin shortly and carry-on for the rest of the year. To prepare for the renegotiation, CME has been working with its members to better understand their concerns with the current NAFTA and opportunities for improvement. We are conducting a survey of NAFTA priorities and CME staff is leveraging member input and direction for participation on several government advisory committees with Canada’s negotiation team as well as ongoing meetings with the Prime Minister’s Office and other Ministers and their offices. We encourage all members to complete the survey and to share it with their supply chains

Other national policy, regulatory and program areas
CME is involved in a wide variety of actions on government policies, regulations and programs on behalf of our members in Ottawa and across the country. We are focused on reducing your cost of operating in Canada and providing as much support as possible for investing in and growing your business at home and abroad.
